![]() ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of concerns including behavioral issues, chronic conditions, fertility problems, back pain and arthritis. It can also be used to help horses perform at their peak. For more information on how acupuncture works, what a treatment looks like, and what other problems it can be used to treat, CLICK HERE. |
![]() DENTISTRY
Equine dentistry is changing. The advent of better and safer sedatives has allowed us to take a closer look at the horse's mouth and appreciate more pathology. With a speculum exam, we can not only see and address tooth overgrowths but also soft tissue problems; gingivitis isn't just a problem in people. Utilizing power tools we can more quickly and easily smooth sharp edges or reduce dental overgrowths resulting in a better end product. |
![]() Equine Medical Manipulation (chiropractic type adjustments)
Treatment begins with a history of the horse, current issues under saddle and an exam at the walk. While trotting is great for looking at lameness, the spine actually moves more at the walk making it better for evaluation. Next comes a brief check of the cranial nerves and motion palpation of the entire body, starting at the temporomandibular joint and hyoid bone, continuing down the neck and back with special attention paid to each rib head, the sacroiliac region and pelvis. Beyond looking at the axial skeleton there are stops in between to manipulate all of the joints of both front and rear legs. Abnormalities in the motion of the joints along the way are generally corrected at the same time. ![]() LAMENESS EXAMINATIONS
A lameness exam has three parts: localizing the lameness, determining the cause of lameness and finally treating it. The lameness is first localized by a combination of a physical examination including hoof testers, assessing the horse on the flat, on a lunge line or under saddle, flexion tests and local nerve blocks. Underlying cause is determined utilizing digital radiographs and ultrasound. Treatment obviously depends on the cause but can include confinement, oral or injectable joint supplements, physical therapy including a graduated exercise plan, joint injections, or stem cell therapy. ![]() BREEDING SERVICES
Include uterine palpation and ultrasound to determine the best time to breed. Artificial insemination with either fresh or frozen semen. Ultrasound guided pregnancy checks at 15 days to monitor for twins as well as at frequent intervals to ensure the health and viability of the growing fetus. |
![]() PRE-PURCHASE EXAMINATIONS
A pre-purchase examination is the most rigorous assessment that a healthy horse will undergo. It consists of a detailed examination of the body looking for any lumps, bumps and scars as well as a soundness exam. At FHVP we offer two levels of examinations from a more basic exam suitable for pleasure/trail ride horses to a more in-depth exam for show and competition horses. Click the following link for details of both exams: Pre-Purchase Exam Comparison ![]() NEO-NATAL CARE
New foals are born without an active immune system, leaving them highly susceptible to infection. A new foal's protection from disease comes from his mother's first milk, known as colostrum. FHVP prefers to see the new foal within 8-12 hours of birth to check that immunity has been established as well as monitoring for any other congenital problems such as a cleft palate, entropion (rolled in eyelids), cataracts or hernias. The mare as well as the placenta will be checked to recognize and treat complications such as a retained portion of the placenta. ![]() SURGERIES
FHVP will perform basic surgeries on the farm such as castrations and laceration repairs. ![]() TREATMENT & MONITORING OF CHRONIC CONDITIONS
Dealing with chronic conditions such as laminitis, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (equine Cushing's), or recurrent airway obstruction (heaves) can be frustrating. At FHVP we will take time to answer all of your questions and provide you with all of the treatment options, including acupuncture and herbs, which are often helpful in these situations. |
